  1. It works. 4 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Mar 2021

While the Anchor Wizard is a great functional product, priced well there can be installation issues that can be solved by a DIYer or a shop if you have it professionally installed. Specifically, the mounting plate for the anchor shoot that is to match up with brass inserts to screw it to a kayak had to be cut to get the holes in it to center over the factory installed inserts that are not even. Cutting slots into the mounting plate may be the answer to the user can move the plate around until the inserts are directly available to screw it to the kayak. As is there is no way it will attach. One screw will fit, then the other three hole must be cut to get them to allow the provided screws to enter the inserts. Screws were too long for the AP 120 kayak. I found screws 1/2 the length of those provided that worked. It may be a good idea to use them just a bit longer than what I used, along with a washer and lock washer. Just tested Anchor Wizard yesterday mounted on kayak. It worked just as it is supposed to. It is a must for long distance kayaking for safety and convenience.

  2. A game changer 5 Star Review

As someone a little older this retrieval system has been a God send. I was a little hesitant at first due to cost but in the end I broke down...and glad I did.
The only problem I have experienced so far is the reentry of the anchor into the chute. I do not think this is a design flaw as there are so many different anchors on the market. The 3lb grapnel style anchor I use has the line zip tied to the top but attached at the bottom so as to break free if snagged. This caused an alignment problem at the top to enter the chute. It would get hung up on the chute lip. I would go up and down several times before I hit it just right to get it back into the chute. I solved this problem with a 25 cent, very small plastic funnel you can pick up almost anywhere.I had to trim it down a little to get it to fit the chute but it took care of the problem and has never hung up since. Anchor wizard might consider this as an option. I can tell you it works great. Very happy and highly recommended especially for older guys in Kayaks.

  3. Great addition to my Fishing Kayak 5 Star Review

I received the product last week, installed it the same day and went fishing the following day. It worked absolutely fantastic. Another great product was their 4lb anchor. It was great at holding my kayak when I needed it to and reeled up and stored properly every time.

  4. THOUGHT it would be a dream. Not so much. 3 Star Review

I really wanted to love this product, unfortunately it did not work out. I owned and used it for 6 months and 50 or so trips before removing it. Several issues I had:

    1. If you retrieve your anchor by winding the reel you will get significant line twist after a period of time. You could prevent this by pulling up your line by hand and then winding it up, but that seems like double the work to me.

    2. I own a typical grapnel style anchor and it did not usually slide up and store on the first, second, and even sometimes third or more attempts. It tends to pinch and bind up where the rope and anchor connect. I thought by maybe improving the line direction to reduce friction this would help, so I installed a screw eye which made the line perfectly straight entering the anchor sheath. Unfortunately this did not fix the problem. Winding it up and letting it down multiple times just to stow my anchor once took too much time.

    3. If you plan on ever replacing the line you have to take the reel completely apart, and if you have permanently affixed it using the included wood screws you will have to remove it from your boat prior to doing so. I initially replaced the included rope with smaller diameter, higher strength, abrasion resistant kite line. This allowed me to put more line on the spool. This was unnecessarily complicated and requires snap ring pliers (not a common household tool). In all fairness maybe the line was never intended to be replaced.

In the end, the concept was fantastic, the engineering not so much. At the high price point for some plastic, ropes, and some washers I was really disappointed. For six+ months I gave it an honest try and I wanted so much to love this product. Now it sits removed in my garage. Anyone want to buy a second hand anchor wizard selling for $50?

I recently bought the new low profile Anchor Wizard and got it along with the Shute mounted on my Old Town Oredator PDL. LOGGED ABOUT 10 hrs on the water and it worked fantastic and it's going to be a game changer in 2018.

  8. Anchor wizard is amazing 5 Star Review

Posted by on 23rd Feb 2018

Very nice product it feels well constructed and the plastic does not feel weak at all. Upon receiving the anchor we pulled all the line out and reeled it in tight with it tied to a chair on wheels with a person sitting in it lol. Obviously it did not pull the person but it didn’t budge either, we were quite impressed and have no doubt this thing will hold us and our kayaks in the creeks and rivers around here.

  9. Tricky mount on the Native Slayer Propel 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Feb 2018

I love this product but it was a little tricky mounting it on my Native. The rudder is right in the way of where the anchor should fall in the back. Other than that it is an awesome anchor system.

  10. Works Great on Vibe Sea Ghost 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Feb 2018

The Anchor Wizard works great mounted to my Vibe Sea Ghost. It eliminates the frustration of fighting with the anchor line. The Anchor Wizard frees up space on the deck of my kayak that was taken up by my old anchor and the anchor rope. The Anchor Wizard is a nice clean solution that speeds up the deployment and retrieval of the anchor allowing me to spend more time fishing. Thanks for a solid product.
